You Have Lost Your Hold

This is a response to another Red Dress Club prompt...Jealousy. I tried poetry this time!

 You Have Lost Your Hold

Living in a world in which I couldn't trust...
you had me all the time.
You lurked around, seeking to take me,
control me,
and keep me preoccupied.
Each life beside me,
was one I wanted for my own.
Their clothes, their friends,
or the way he looked her in the eye.
It seemed each thing that glittered,
was something I couldn't have.
My life compared was black and dull...
and didn't shine at all.
If they looked warm,
it was cold I felt.
Loved
then only loneliness was mine.
The mirror showed that which I didn't have
or didn't hold
and jealousy was mine.

Until the days passed and aged
and I saw them all for real.
All their pain
and uneasy walks
and that their lives were
imperfect,
 just as mine.
Envy lost its hold
and compassion entered in.
Each walk in this life
holds pain and unfed needs.
No life is worthy of
another to want it more.
Within our own skin
we will find our way.
No life is any better
than the given gift of mine.

  1. Superb, just wonderful. Thank you for voicing those thoughts.

Of all the posts I read on the matter (and I read plenty because this is a subject close to my heart) this best describes how I feel.

    No life is any better
than the given gift of mine.

    Amen.

  2. That is so, so true. We never really know what's going on with other people, and everyone definitely has their own pain. Lovely post!

  3. This poem puts it beautifully. I love the transformation from being jealous to being compassionate.

  4. So true. We imagine everyone else has perfect lives, but in reality, no one does. I especially liked these lines, "Each walk in this life
    holds pain and unfed needs.
    No life is worthy of
    another to want it more."

I would love to have some feedback. Let me know what you love...and let me know what you don't.
